Characteristics

20 Cents

Forgery 4 - 20 Cents
  1. There is no crosshatching between DE SUEZ and POSTES.
  2. The stern of the ship is curved.
  3. There is one passenger in the bow and one in front of the mizzenmast and a suggestion of three others, one in front of the foremast, one in front of the mainmast and one behind the mizzenmast.
  4. The smoke plume is copious, and is delicately outlined with a series of short arcs connected by dots. It just reaches the oval border but is not joined to the rim of the smokestack which is unshaded.
  5. The commas are long, thin and continuous with the decoration surrounding the circles containing the denomination.
  6. The rays of the sunbursts are short and narrow and the central dot is much smaller than in the genuine stamp.
  7. All the A’s have flat tops.
